VeloBuild comes to Goodwin

We are excited to be taking part in "All Things Active: VeloBuild" this term. Over the last couple of weeks, students have been building bikes and learning how to service them and replace or renew damaged or worn elements.

"VeloBuild" is a completely hands-on course that has been proven to be helpful to students who have difficulties with reading, comprehension, or emotional / behavioural issues.

The course offers a number of benefits, such as:

  • Gives students vocational knowledge and skills
  • Active learning
  • Improved motor skills
  • Encourages physical activity
  • The course can be incorporated into the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme
  • Pilot programmes have shown significant improvements to student attendance and retention
  • All students are given a helmet, Hi-Viz belt, and light set upon completion of the course
  • Bikeability instructors can deliver an optional safe riding / road safety course for the students (Bikeability is the updated version of the National Cycling Proficiency Certificate)

What’s even more impressive is that each student gets to keep the bike they build at the end of the project!

We have had a great response to the course so far, with students fully engaged in the sessions.
