New Headteacher, Rachael Moon with outgoing Principal, Simon Smith

We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Rachael Moon as our new Headteacher.

Current Principal, Simon Smith, has led the academy for the last six years but has decided to take on a new challenge. This term will, therefore, be his last before he starts a new role as Service Manager for Pupil Referral Units, Inclusion, and Attendance within the Children, Young People, and Education Directorate at Kent County Council in the New Year.

Following a rigorous recruitment process, Rachael Moon has now been appointed as his successor at Goodwin Academy. Rachael is currently the academy’s Vice Principal of Curriculum and Academic Standards. Prior to that, she also held the role of Assistant Principal of Thinking Teaching and Learning at the academy. As such, she brings with her a real understanding of how the school operates.

Rachael has a strong track record of school improvement and has always been dedicated to ensuring the academy provides the best possible education to give pupils the best chances to succeed. Rachael is committed to upholding high standards and expectations to drive forward improvements.

Rachael has been working closely with Simon, and Thinking Schools Academy Trust’s Director of Education, Gwynn Bassan, to ensure a smooth transition.

Director of Education, Gwynn Bassan, said:

“I am so pleased to announce the appointment of Rachael Moon as the new Head Teacher of Goodwin Academy. Her enthusiasm, expertise and in-depth knowledge of Goodwin Academy mean she will make such a success of her new role.

“The Thinking Schools Academy Trust, Goodwin’s governors and I all have real confidence in Rachael and that she will ensure the school continues to offer our pupils the best possible education.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Simon for all his excellent work as Principal over the last six years and all his time at Goodwin stretching back almost two decades. We wish him every success in his new job.”

Speaking on her appointment, Rachael Moon said:

“I am delighted to have been appointed as the next Head Teacher of Goodwin Academy. I am passionate about our values of Brilliance, Enrichment, Society and Thinking and ensuring all pupils achieve their personal best. I look forward to working alongside our fantastic team of colleagues and the wider community to uphold these values and the highest of expectations to ensure we provide exceptional life chances for our young people.”

Outgoing principal, Simon Smith, said:

“After 17 years at Goodwin Academy, six of which I have proudly been Principal, it is time for me to say my farewells. I am extremely grateful for all of the wonderful experiences and challenges I have been offered throughout my career here, and for the opportunity to work with so many incredible people. I am comforted to know that I leave behind a fantastic team of staff who will continue to encourage our students to be their best.
