School Opening for Year 11 -13 only – Wednesday 7th January

We wanted to provide you with an important update regarding the heating situation at Goodwin Academy and our plans for tomorrow for a partial opening of the school.

Our heating system has been running throughout the day and is gradually warming the school building. Engineers visited the school again today and have optimised the system. They are confident that, with an additional full day of heating, the building will reach a comfortable temperature for all students to return on Thursday 8th January.

To support this process, we have purchased additional electric heaters and hired further units. These have been placed in selected rooms, which have now reached a comfortable temperature for learning. However, it will not be possible to heat all classrooms in this way before tomorrow.

Therefore, the school will be open tomorrow to Year 11 and Year 13 students only, as these year groups have priority due to their upcoming examinations.

Year 12 students completing external exams in Sport, Business, Psychology, Applied Science, and Health & Social Care should also attend. Additional heating has been placed in all exam spaces to ensure a suitable temperature. Students should arrive 30 minutes before their exam and report to Reception upon arrival.

A suitable study room with additional heating will be provided for Year 12 students to work between exams. Year 12 students should assemble in the sixth form common room at 08:35am where Mrs Mercer, Head of Sixth Form, will explain the plan for the day.

For students in Years 7 - 10 and Year 12 with no exams, work will be set via Microsoft Teams and teachers will monitor completion.

Plan for Year 11 -13 student return on Wednesday 7th January:

  • Entry: All students attending school should enter via Reception.
  • Period 1:
    • Year 11 students should assemble in the canteen.
    • Year 12 and Year 13 students should assemble in the Sixth Form Common Room.
  • Year 11 and 13 will complete lessons in allocated classrooms with additional heating.
  • There will be no Year 11 tutoring after school.

Students attending school are welcome to wear their own clothes and should dress appropriately for the cold weather.

Free School Meals:
All students in Years 7–13 who are in receipt of free school meals can arrive between 12:30 pm and 1:00 pm to collect a warm takeaway lunch.
Please complete this form to confirm if a meal is required and select your choice: [Wednesday 7th January - Free school meal form – Fill in form].

We will provide further updates during the school day tomorrow. Thank you for your understanding and patience while we continue to work to resolve this issue.

Eid Cooking in Helen Keller Centre

May 3, 2023 08:05am

Year 8 and 9 students from the school's Helen Keller Centre recently learned about the festival of Eid. A fellow Goodwin student who celebrates the festival spoke to them about what Eid is and why it is celebrated in his religion.

To mark the occasion, students worked together to bake some delicious Eid biscuits. Throughout the baking session, there was some excellent teamwork amongst the students, and the results were delicious!

Many thanks to Miss Measday for giving her time to support and for making this enjoyable event possible.

From all of us at Goodwin, we wish a belated Eid Mubarak to all who celebrate!
