32 years ago, on Friday 22nd September the IRA set off a time bomb in the Royal Marines School of Music, killing 11 people and injuring a further 21. This year, Goodwin Academy were invited to be involved in the Deal Bandstand Memorial for the Deal Barracks Bombing, commemorating all those who were lost.
Principal, Mr Simon Smith, was in attendance with Head of Year 8 and History Teacher, Miss Jessica Wiles, and five students from the academy who were chosen to attend for being role model students and promoting Goodwin values. The students were; Ella Cooper, Zack Thompson, Alex Chilton, Ed Hammond and Iris Mosley.
Goodwin Academy representative met the chairman of the Bandstand Memorial Trust, who was working at the barracks at the time of the attack. He provided an overview of the memorial and a spoken history of the events. The Chairman explained the importance of remembering what happened and the men who died and that the curriculum covers this significant local history because of the impact is has and still has on the community of Deal.
Goodwin Academy will continue to attend this annual event and support the local community through their teachings of the event as part of their history curriculum.
